CCBH investigates the spread of specific reportable diseases in our community. Communicable diseases are illnesses that people can spread to others through contaminated surfaces or objects, bodily fluids, blood products, insects, or through the air.

Specific diseases and disease outbreaks are a concern to public health and considered reportable. Ohio Administrative Code 3701-3 requires that these diseases and outbreaks be reported to the local health department. Personal health information is kept confidential. Our team closely monitors these diseases, allowing us to:

  • Identify patterns of spread or emerging trends and outbreaks,
  • Prevent further spread with public health interventions, and
  • Share helpful information about diseases with our community.
Reporting

Reporting

Reportable diseases are those of public health concern. They are grouped by Class (A, B, or C) based on their severity or potential for epidemic spread. Individual cases of Class A or B diseases are reportable.

Clusters, outbreaks, epidemics, or unusual trends of any illness are also reportable. Outbreaks of non-reportable disease or unknown illness are considered Class C. Examples of a Class C outbreak include Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease (HFMD), RSV, influenza, norovirus, and scabies.  
 
Exception: Report an outbreak or incident immediately by phone if it is unexpectedly severe, involves a new or novel infectious agent, or is suspected to be a public health hazard or act of bioterrorism. This could include outbreaks of Class A or B diseases or those involving many individuals or deaths.
Healthcare providers, facilities, and laboratories can report communicable diseases electronically through direct entry into the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS) or Electronic Laboratory Reporting.

C An outbreak, unusual incident, or epidemic of non A or B disease By the end of the next business day

 

Where to report

Reports should be made to the local health jurisdiction located where the case (patient) lives or where the outbreak happened.

Please note that

  • Cuyahoga County and the City of Cleveland are separate local health jurisdictions, and
  • Tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and HIV are investigated by different programs
