Cyclosporiasis Outbreak Situation Report
A multistate increase in Cyclosporiasis is affecting Ohio and Cuyahoga County. Federal investigators have linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico, which the supplier has now voluntarily recalled.

Recalled: iceberg lettuce from central Mexico
Taylor Farms de Mexico is voluntarily recalling all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico because it may be contaminated with Cyclospora. The recall was prompted by the ongoing multistate outbreak, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration published it on July 18, 2026.
The recalled lettuce was distributed June 29 through July 16, 2026 to 27 states - including Ohio - under multiple brands (CV, JB, Mark, MKTSD, PK, SUB, SY, TF, and others), in both foodservice and retail products. Retail items include bagged Iceberg Salad (12 oz, 24 oz) and Shredded Lettuce (8 oz, 16 oz).
What to do: Do not eat recalled iceberg lettuce. Check the FDA recall notice for brands, sizes, and best-by dates, then throw the product away or return it to the store for a full refund. If you have symptoms of cyclosporiasis, contact your health care provider — especially if you ate iceberg lettuce in the two weeks before you got sick. Clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers the lettuce touched.

Outbreak background
Since May 1, 2026, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted a sharp increase in cases of Cyclosporiasis across multiple regions of the country. That increase has also been seen in Ohio, including here in Cuyahoga County.
Why case counts differ between sources
You may see different numbers from CCBH, ODH, CDC, and FDA. These count different things:
- State and local counts may include both probable and confirmed cases, and may include initial reports not yet forwarded to CDC.
- CDC and FDA outbreak counts include confirmed cases only.
- CDC national surveillance figures track laboratory-confirmed cases across the U.S. overall - including this outbreak and illnesses that are not part of it.
All counts are expected to change as cases are confirmed or reclassified.
Cuyahoga County Board of Health response
The CCBH Office of Epidemiology, Surveillance and Informatics (ESI) is conducting appropriate follow-up with all confirmed and suspected cases. This work includes, but is not limited to:
- Case interviews with confirmed and suspected patients
- Laboratory analysis and coordination of diagnostic testing
- Environmental health follow-up at implicated locations
What Cuyahoga County residents should do
- Do not eat recalled iceberg lettuce from central Mexico. Check the FDA recall notice for brands, sizes, and best-by dates, then throw the product away or return it to the store for a refund.
- Call your health care provider if you have symptoms - particularly diarrhea that comes and goes. Mention any iceberg lettuce you ate in the two weeks before you got sick, and ask about testing for Cyclospora.
- Answer the call if we reach out. If you are sick, CCBH or state health officials may contact you to ask what you ate. Your answers help identify contaminated food faster.
- Clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that touched implicated lettuce.
