What should I do if a winter storm warning is issued?

  • Stay indoors. Winter storms, especially blizzards, can be very dangerous.
  • If you must go outside wear several layers of lightweight clothing, those layers will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat.
  • Gloves and a hat will prevent loss of body heat.
  • Cover your mouth to protect your lungs.
  • Walk carefully on snowy, icy walkways.

What is freezing rain?

Freezing rain creates a coating of ice on roads and walkways.

What is sleet?

“Sleet” is rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground and causes roads to freeze and become slippery.

What is a frost/freeze warning?

When below freezing temperatures are expected a frost/freeze warning is issued.

What is a winter weather advisory?

When cold temperatures with ice and snow are expected, a winter weather advisory is issued.

What is a winter storm watch?

A winter storm watch is when hazardous winter weather conditions – such as snow greater than 6 inches in 24 hours, winds gusting over 35 mph, or visibility – less than a 1/4 mile – are expected in the next 12 to 36 hours.
