Data Sources and Methodology

COVID-19 Data

COVID-19 Death Curve
Data displayed are from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Vital Statistics.  Definitive cause of death can take some time to determine.  Data will not match ODRS daily totals.  Counts represent deaths due to COVID-19 among individuals residing in the CCBH jurisdiction.  This excludes the City of Cleveland.

COVID-19 Epi Curve and Hospitalizations
Case data displayed are from the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS) and represent the Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH) jurisdiction.  This excludes the City of Cleveland.

COVID-19 Vaccinations
Vaccine data displayed are provided by ODH from the Impact Statewide Immunization Information System (ImpactSIIS).  Data are analyzed by CCBH and include the City of Cleveland.

“Updated Vaccine” represents the number of people who have received an updated (monovalent) dose of a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine on or after August 24, 2024, as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the 2024-2025 season.

Influenza Surveillance Data

Pneumonia & Influenza (P&I) Related Deaths
Data displayed are from the vital statistics offices within Cuyahoga County, which include Cleveland, Lakewood and Parma. Each office reports the percentage of deaths due to pneumonia or influenza that occur within their jurisdiction. Cleveland issues death certificates for 57 of the 59 cities in the county.

Influenza-associated Hospitalizations (IAHs)
Data displayed are from the Ohio Disease Reporting System (ODRS) and represent the Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH) and the Cleveland Department of Public Health (CDPH) jurisdictions. Hospitalizations can be used as an indicator of the severity of illness during a particular influenza season. This condition became reportable in January 2009.

Emergency Department (ED) Visits for Influenza-like illness (ILI) and Fever
Data displayed are from the EpiCenter surveillance system.  EpiCenter collects emergency department chief complaint data from countywide hospitals and urgent care facilities and classifies them into symptom and syndrome categories.  Chief complaints regarding Influenza-like illness (ILI) and fever are analyzed each week.

Over-The-Counter (OTC) Products
Data displayed are from the National Retail Data Monitor (NRDM) surveillance system. NRDM collects over-the-counter (OTC) drug sales information from Cuyahoga County chain drug stores and grocery stores. Pediatric cold products, anti-fever products and thermometer sales are monitored on a weekly basis.

School Absenteeism data (due to illness)
Cuyahoga County schools provide weekly absenteeism data about the number of children absent due to any illness.
