Why use a HEPA vacuum?

Careful cleaning of areas that may contain lead is very important to prevent lead poisoning in children. Lead dust collects on window sill, floors, toys, furniture, or even the fur of animals. From there, lead dust can easily find its way into a child’s mouth through normal activities.

A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) vacuum is a completely sealed vacuum that contains a specialized filter designed to trap virtually all of the lead dust. This prevents small particles of lead from being blown throughout the room in the exhaust of the vacuum.

The Ohio Department of Health makes HEPA vacuums available to local health departments throughout the state.
