Characteristics of Mothers by Source of Payment for the Delivery:
Cuyahoga County, 2022

Nearly 97% of mothers in Cuyahoga County had health coverage for delivery in 2022, primarily through private insurance (48.8%) and Medicaid (47.2%).
Key findings:

  • Race/Ethnicity: Private insurance was most common among Asian (71.6%) and White mothers (66.8%), while Medicaid covered 75.7% of Black/African American and 63.2% of Hispanic mothers.
  • Age: Medicaid covered 85.7% of deliveries for mothers under 20, while private insurance rose to 68.2% for those 35 and older.
  • Education: Mothers with a bachelor’s degree or higher were most likely to have private insurance (87.5%), compared to just 6.4% among those with less than a high school education.
  • Self-pay: Overall low (3.1%), but highest among Hispanic mothers and those with lower education levels
