Program Description

The Child Fatality Review examines the circumstances surrounding the death of children and makes recommendations for actions to reduce preventable deaths in children under 18 years for Cuyahoga County.

It is comprised of an interdisciplinary committee reviewing each death & risk factors associated with the death.

Data is collected, de-identified, and used to support programing within the county to help in preventing future child deaths.

Cuyahoga County data is entered into the National Center for Child Fatality Review and Prevention database and leads to a better understanding of how and why children and infants die.

This work is mandated under Ohio Revised Code for every county within Ohio.

Priority Population

All children under 18 years old that live in Cuyahoga County.

What is the problem we are working to address?

The program works to reduce the number of preventable child deaths that occur within the county.

What are the solutions?

The program helps identify trends and common risk factors amongst types of death.

This creates the opportunity to identify potential points of intervention to prevent future deaths.

An example of this is seeing an increase in the number of drowning deaths and finding funding to provide free swim lessons.
