Bed Bug

Bed bugs are small insects that feed on blood. They can be found in homes, apartments, nursing homes, offices, retail stores, and other places where people gather.

Bed bugs do not transfer human diseases. However, bed bug infestations can cause psychological and emotional distress.

Detailed information and resources about bed bugs can be found here: Cuyahoga County Bed Bug Task Force

  • About the size of an apple seed (3/16 – 1/4 inch long)
  • Give off a musty-sweetish odor

Where Do I Look For Bed Bugs?

  • Mattress seams, box springs, bed frames, and headboards
  • Furniture seams and joints
  • Behind outlet covers and loose wallpaper
  • Baseboards, picture frames, and wall cracks

How Do I Know If I Have Bed Bugs?

Small black or rusty spots on mattresses or bedding (droppings or blood stains).

Red, itchy welts on exposed skin after sleeping – bite reactions may take several days to appear.

Avoid scratching bites. Seek medical care if reactions are severe.

Eliminating bed bugs is difficult and often requires a licensed pest control professional. Multiple treatments may be necessary.

Get rid of clutter – reduce the number of hiding places and also allow for effective treatment.

Vacuum mattresses, box springs and carpets thoroughly and then dispose of contents in a sealed plastic bag.

Wash and dry bedding and garments using high heat to kill any bugs and destroy eggs.

Enclose your mattress, box spring and pillows with zippered covers or encasements for one full year.

Use bed bug traps or interceptors under the legs of beds and furniture to determine if bed bugs are present.

Carefully use pesticides labeled and approved for indoor use on bed bugs –bug bombs or foggers are not recommended.
