Asbestos
“Asbestos” is the commercial name for a group of mineral fibers that were previously used for industrial process and products. Since asbestos has a high-fiber strength and is heat-resistant, it was used in homes and buildings for insulation and as a fire retardant.
Asbestos may be found in products in your home:
- Attic and/or wall insulation containing vermiculite
- Hot water and/or steam pipes coated with asbestos wrap or tap
- Roofing and siding shingles
- Vinyl floor tiles and the backing on vinyl sheet flooring and adhesives
If left undisturbed, materials containing asbestos do not pose a health risk. Exposure to asbestos fibers can occur when the asbestos-containing material is damaged during home maintenance, repair and remodeling. Once the material is damaged, those particles and fibers are released into the air. Since they are microscopic in size, they can accumulate in the lungs and cause respiratory illness.
If you decide to remove, or you must disturb the material due to a renovation project, the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (OEPA) recommends that you first contact a certified asbestos specialist to determine if the material contains asbestos. You can then contact an Ohio-licensed asbestos contractor if needed.
