2023 Cuyahoga County Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Annual Report
The 2023 Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Annual Report highlights ongoing efforts in Cuyahoga County to better understand and prevent fetal and infant deaths. In 2023, there were 88 fetal deaths, continuing a gradual decline over the past decade, though the county’s fetal mortality rate remains higher than state and national rates
The report identifies persistent racial and geographic disparities, with Black non-Hispanic mothers experiencing fetal loss at significantly higher rates. Most fetal deaths occurred between 20–27 weeks of gestation, with placental issues, maternal conditions, and premature rupture of membranes identified as leading causes. The report concludes with community-focused recommendations aimed at improving maternal health, addressing chronic conditions, increasing access to care, and reducing preventable pregnancy losses
